Main St. Newsletter

Principal’s Message

Newsletter Sept-Oct 2017

Main Street students have settled into their new classrooms and are on their way to a fantastic year of learning! I always get excited each school year about all of the possibilities a new school year brings. I hope your attendance at Back-to- School Night (BTSN) enabled you to learn about grade level curriculum and exciting educational activities planned for your children. I believe we’ve assembled an outstanding group of educators, dedicated to ensuring our students achieve to the very best of their abilities. It’s going to be a great year!

Hopefully, by now, all of you have had an opportunity to see our beautiful new playgrounds! They are simply amazing! The students are so excited to have top-of-the-line equipment on which to play. We have noticed we are having less issues during recesses, due in part, to the increased amount of options for students to play. Our Kindergarten playground is just perfect for our smaller students, and it’s a joy to see how much fun they are having in their own area. We are also very excited about our playground restrooms near the Life Lab being remodeled and upgraded! The new equipment and remodeling are your Measure C dollars at work!

New this year is our ONLINE Student Emergency Form. You should have received a letter with your access code, which was sent home with your student in early September. Once this information is in our system, you’ll no longer need to fill out a form each year. The health portion of the Emergency Form will be ready to be updated online soon. If you haven’t already input your emergency information, please do so immediately. We need to know who to contact in an emergency. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer in the office.

I am thrilled to announce that our school raised $2,000 for our Heroes for Houston campaign! Our students definitely demonstrated The Main Street Way by being so CARING. We will be helping Shadydale Elementary School in Houston buy much needed supplies for their students. Many of the families lost everything in the hurricane, and the school was damaged as well. I’m so proud of our students and the Main Street community! Thank you to all who contributed to our fundraiser.

Another great way to feel a part of our community is celebrating our Spirit Days, which are generally the last Friday of the month. You may have noticed our Blue Heron mascot on our office walls and elsewhere. Hi name is Big Blue, and we are celebrating him on our first Spirit Day, Friday, Sept. 29th, when we hope everyone in the school wears either spirit wear (available to order in the office) or the color blue. We have a school spirit trophy awarded to the class with the most participants each month.

Please help me welcome several new staff members who have quickly become part of the Main Street team. New to first grade are Laura Bender, who previously taught on the East Coast and Costa Rica, and Aubrie Polito, who most recently taught in Belmont Shores. Erik Foster, who student taught here last year, is job sharing with Ms. Galvan in 2nd grade. We have a new psychologist, Melissa Volo, who moved here from New York. Lori Aban, an experienced instructional aide in SUESD, is working in Room 25. Laurie Struckmeyer is our new Administrative Assistant from the Sacramento area, and comes with a wealth of school office experience. I am confident each and every one of these new employees will be an advocate for our students!

Looking forward to an outstanding year! Annette Bitter, Principal

Community Forums The Soquel Union Elementary School District

Community Forums The Soquel Union Elementary School District (SUESD) values communication and community input. Accordingly, the SUESD Board of Trustees has established an annual Community Forum be held to facilitate community engagement. Last year, SUESD received feedback saying that this event should occur more frequently than on an annual basis and should be held in more than one location. Therefore, SUESD will host two Community Forums this year. Both events will deliver information regarding key issues and current events in SUESD. Both events will also offer opportunities for community members to ask questions and offer input on what’s working well in the district and how we can continuously improve. Both SUESD Community Forums will address district-wide issues.

Community Forum I Thursday, October 26, 2017 @ 6:00 Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary School Multi-Use Room

Community Forum II (And Regular Board Meeting) Wednesday, February 7, 2018 @ 6:30 New Brighton Middle School Performing Arts Center

No Bullying Zone October is Anti-Bullying month

No Bullying Zone October is Anti-Bullying month and to bring attention to this important issue, we will be asking students to wear BLUE on Oct. 2, which is National Blue Shirt Day, World Day of Bullying Prevention. Later in the month, we will continue our quest against bullying with our “Donut Bully” campaign during the week of Oct. 23-27. Every Sprinkle (aka Student) Counts! Students will be asked to sign their names on paper sprinkles, which will be added to our giant donut on display in front of the school. Each day will feature fun themes to reinforce the idea of choosing not to bully. On Friday, we hope to give each student a donut to celebrate the week. We hope all of our students participate! Monday – October 23rd Give Bullying The Boot! (western wear) Tuesday – October 24th Team Up Against Bullying! (jersey / sports wear) Wednesday – October 25th Lei Off Of Bullying! (hawaiian theme) Thursday – October 26th Shade Out The Bullying! (wear sunhats or sunglasses) Friday – October 27th We DONUT approve of bullying, so we DONUT care what we wear! (mis-match day)

Computer Lab Hours Before and After School

Computer Lab Hours Before and After School We are fortunate to have our computer lab open before and after school so students can work on homework and use the computers to hone their math, literacy, and computer skills. A credentialed teacher, Ms. Lori Kearney, facilitates the lab. Multiple academic programs, as well as typing tutorials and programming sites are available to students in Kindergarten through 5th grades. Students are expected to work quietly while in the computer lab. Heroes for Houston

Main Street is raising money for the Houston flooding victims. We are encouraging students to bring money to contribute to a school donation. We are calling our campaign, Heroes for Houston, and will run it Aug. 31 to Sept. 15. The class that brings in the most donations will win a root beer float party. There are containers in each classroom! We will accept donations in the office, too.
